A Reading Of The Ethics Of Revolt Of Nurettin
Topçu Based On Death Ethics

Nurettin Topçu constitutes his understanding of morals on the basis of Maurice Blondel’s actionism, and Su􀏐ism. This understanding is called voluntarist idealism, action ethics, and ethics of revolt. In this paper, Topçu’s views concerning the 􀏐ield of morals will be considered in context of death ethics. By death ethics, I mean an understanding of morals depending on metaphorical or voluntary death, which is brie􀏐ly expressed by the hadith “Die before you die”. Through this death, human being wipes his/her self in the Absolute Being in an aspect; comprehends that he/she is in, from, and with Him; and gains habit in line with this consciousness. Such points can be stated when Topçu’s ethics of revolt is considered in the perspective of death ethics: Human being is enslaved by every kind of tie, whether individual or social. In order to get rid of this slavery, revolt against the self without God, and thus action is required. At the end of this, the person reaches eternity, Absolute Being, by passing all individual and social stages; and surrenders to His will, and his/her being is wiped away in His being. In this case, metaphorical or voluntary death happens. However, the duality between God and human being also holds over. On the other hand, this action and revolt is endless and renewed consistently.

Thinking About Morality

Thinking About Morality Abstract: We live in an era in which information and communication are in constant rise and technology is more imperious thanks to its developments that are beyond itself and thus issues of our moral life are far more complicated. The very branch of philosophy that carries out investigations concerning morality (ethics) has limited itself to pure analysis and critical activities on this field. However, the history of philosophy -until recently- was full of examples that started with the activity of pursuing the truth and crowned the process with ethics. Let alone contemplating about ethical norms and virtues and making suggestions, even the very philosophy that carries out investigations about morality is almost cast aside. On the other hand, it is thought that solutions simply lay in values education. Values education being considered with regard to “social sciences”, yet developing a progress of enquiry and practice that is not linked with the philosophical thinking reveals problems. Social sciences and philosophical thinking are obliged to be at work together. Morality is found in the essential part of humanity. Seperating our cognitive and acting sides may be possible in thought but surely impossible in practice. Therefore morality encompasses our essential aspect (in terms of being a character) and our actions to a certain degree.

Transcendence and Morality

What is man, by what features man differs from other living things and does life have any meaning, such questions and problems require an ethical and metaphysical approach. Human beings are not just a living species, although they are in and a part of nature. Man is not an entity that can be explained and consumed by physical and biological facts. Because the human being is a value asset that can think and imagine beyond, despite being surrounded and registered with facts. Human beings are the only living beings that seek meaning, attribute meaning, need meaning. Therefore, all of their actions either originate from a value or tend to realize a value. To act for value means to be a moral being. Morality is not being content with fact and doing what should be. Moral personality is formed in the way of t
